Slug evolution is a process made more complex by the presence of large amplitude waves, the variation of the liquid depth ahead of the slug, and the entrainment of the gas phase into the slug body. Experiments "tracking" the evolution of slugs in three phase air-water-oil flows have been conducted for both horizontal and "V"-section pipe configurations on the WASP facility at Imperial College London. The oil was Shell Tellus 22 (ρ{sub}(oil)=865kgm{sup}(-3 @ 15°C, μ{sub}(oil=0.04Pas @ 20°C, σ{sub}(oil)=0.032 Nm @ 25°C). Measurements were obtained for several liquid and gas superficial velocities over a range of water cuts. Details of the interfacial development, slug frequency and average liquid holdup were obtained at 7 axial locations using gamma densitometers. Tomographic images illustrating the transverse distribution of the phases within the liquid slug were constructed by conditional sampling of the output from a traversing beam gamma densitometer.
