pH-and Temperature-Dependent Water Flux Through PP-g-DMAEMA Membranes

Multi-stimuli responsive membranes were prepared by modification of polypropylene (PP) microfiltration membranes with grafted poly (N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (g-DMAEMAE), which was accomplished by first coating the membranes with benzophenone (BP), and then UV irradiation in DMAEMA aqueous solutions. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra of grafted membranes with absorption peaks at 1727.19 cm -1 , 2770 cm -1 , 1152.64 cm -1 verified the grafting of Poly(DMAEMA) on PP membranes. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images showed the difference of surface morphologies between ungrafted and DMAEMA-grafted PP membranes. The effects of pH and temperature on water flux were investigated. It showed that the water flux changed sharply when adjusting pH around the pKa of DMAEMA. Water flux increased with temperature regardless of the change of pH and grafting degree. The effect of temperature on water flux became larger when pH >8 than that when pH <8.
