Anaerobic digestion gases consist primarily of CH4, CO2, plus trace amounts of sulfides, organic halides and non-methane hydrocarbons. The specific contaminants in the anaerobic digestion gas of concern to the fuel cell are sulfur and halides. Both of these ingredients can ‘poison’ and therefore reduce the life of the power plant’s fuel processor. The primary goal of our study was to investigate the selective adsorption kinetics as well as column dynamics and surface chemistry in terms of oxygen exists or not and relative humidity to understand the effect of changes in atmospheric conditions on the performance of potassium iodide impregnated activated carbon bed.
