Bending of a pipe bend is accompanied by the ovalization of its cross section, which leads to a change in the stress distribution and an increase in the bend flexibility as compared to a straight pipe. In a real piping system, a bend is joined with other elements, e.g., straight sections and flanges, whose deformation behavior is different. Since stresses and displacements are always continuous, end effects occur in a certain zone of joining.
