Statistical Mechanics of Quasi-geostrophic Mono- and Poly-Disperse Point Vortex Systems

The statistics of quasi-gestrophic mono- and poly-disperse point voitices are investigated theoretically and numerically, in ordei to understand fundamental aspects of quasi-geostiophic turbulence. The numerical computations are performed using the fast special-purpose computer for molecular dynamics simulations, MDGRAPE-3. The most probable distributions are determined based on the maximum entropy theory. The theoretical predictions agree well with the numerical results.
