This paper presents an interpretation for failure of soils under triaxial compression and extension. We conduct a series of nonlinear finite element analyses for various shapes of specimens under the stress conditions of triaxial compression and extension, and evaluate macroscopic state variable at failure of the specimens from the numerical results. Through the comparison of local mechanical responses of constitutive model and macroscopic behaviours of specimens, we investigate effects of non-uniformity of deformation and change of geometry of the specimen. Furthermore, the relation between the constitutive models and the behaviour of the specimens is discussed.
