Providing cost competitive communication and data information links which replicate terrestrial connections for the private and business jet market poses a challenging technical development effort. This is particularly evident with today's airborne cellular market. These present day issues will soon increase when addressing aero's capacity to disseminate high quality strategic aeronautical weather information or providing for tomorrow's next generation business jet wireless infrastructure. While several approaches are being pursued one tactic driven by the high cost of hardware and maintenance for a satellite link attempts to leverage the existing ground based network. However, under this approach an aircraft with multiple mobile users attempting to link into the existing ground network infrastructure highlights several difficult challenges to maintain high quality of service for the ground and airborne user. A potential key towards addressing these mounting communication infrastructure issues is the advent of a cost competitive reconfigurable antenna. Indeed as an optimized link to the terrestrial infrastructure, the antenna must fulfill multiple roles and thus has great impact on the overall system capability.
