In machine tools linear guidance systems are used whenever components move relatively to each other. The disadvantages of common linear guidance systems with rolling elements are poor dynamical properties. In most cases excitations caused by dynamical process forces or by travel motion can be damped only insufficiently. The Fraunhofer IPT and the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) develop a hydrostatic guidance system in co-operation with several German companies (e.g. INA, INDEX, DS-Technology, Schaudt Mikrosa) consisting of a profiled rail, a carriage and an oil supply system. The modular hydrostatic linear guidance system combines the positive damping effect of a hydrostatic guide way with standardised dimensions of linear ball guidance systems.
