Structrural modification is a design technique which attempts to improve the global dynamic characteristics of a structure by making relatively local changes in the structure. Analytically, these changes, called passive structural modifications, appear as changes to the elements of the system dynamical matrix. When the structure is acted upon by an actuator, the actuator can be used to modify the dynamic properties of the structure as well as simultaneously actuate the structure. This latter modification, which uses an active energy source and feedback, is called active structural modification. Design of actuated structures requires the simultaneous consideration of structural modification, both active and passive, and feedback control. To aid this design process a design approach is presented which combines the efficient matrix techniques used by structural dynamicists with feedback design techniques taken from the field of automatic control.
