Dampers are commonly used to reduce conductor vibration of overhead transmission lines. Depending on the wind velocity and other parameters, a conductor span can vibrate at different modes. As such, the effectiveness of most types of dampers depends on the location of damper placement on the conductor span. This paper presents a probability-based technique to determine the optimal location of damper placement for conductor vibration protection. The primary objective of this approach is to include the following important parameters in the analysis of the damper placement: The overhead transmission line design parameters. The field data which indicates the occurrence or the probability of conductor vibration at different amplitudes and frequencies. The amount of fatigue damage due to different vibration amplitudes and frequencies. The performance characteristics of the damper at different vibration amplitudes and frequencies. The probability of placement error in the installation of the damper.
