Smoke-Free Spaces in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, Part of a Comprehensive Strategy to Control Tobacco and Locally Implement the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control

The World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control was adopted unanimously by the 56th World Health Assembly on the 21st of May 2003. Canada was a signatory to the Framework Convention on July 15, 2003 and China on November 20, 2003. Key elements of this Convention in reducing the demand for tobacco include: 1. Illicit trade in tobacco products 2. Packaging and labelling of tobacco products 3. Regulation of tobacco product disclosures 4. Tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship 5. Price and tax measures 6. Regulation of the contents of tobacco product contents 7. Sales to and by minors 8. Protection from exposure to tobacco smoke 9. Research, surveillance and exchange of information 10. Cooperation in scientific, technical and legal fields and provision of related expertise.
