Continuous casting is one of the most active technologies. Almost every large steel corporation (including Baosteel) invested a lot of manpower and resource to develop the technology. Generally continuous casting technology can be divided into two sides: One is ordinary continuous casting and the other is near net shape continuous casting. For ordinary continuous casting, the development trend is to increase speed, improve productivity and product quality. For near net shape continuous casting, the development is to decrease cost, improve productivity. The representative near net shape continuous casting is strip casting, thin slab continuous casting and reverse solidification. As continuous casting is concerned with solidification and heat transfer process, its development represents the proficiency of iron and steel industry.
