The rapid progress of continuous casting technology from 1970 on resulted in a continuously increasing demand of high grade thermal insulating covering materials. Refratechnik Casting GmbH, Germany, have supported this progress by the development and improvement of thermal insulating covering agents on basis of biogenic silica. As early as 1960, Refratechnik started to develop specific know- how by using biogenic silica derived from rice husk ash to produce insulating refractory bricks for application in the cement and steel industry. Constant improvements in the burning technology of rice husks allowed Refratechnik to develop a range of unique thermal covering agents with unmatched properties. This paper deals with the properties of biogenic silica and its application as thermal insulating material for ladle and tundish of steel plants.
