In the present study, a kind of Fe-Si (3:1 in atomic proportion) system composite powders was prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) method in order to lower the high brittleness of general Fe{sub}3Si alloys. Changes in phase compositions of these Fe-Si composite powders under different ball-milling conditions were examined by XRD, and the optimum experimental parameters were then obtained: the ball-to-powder ratio was 10:1 (in weight percent); rotational speed of the mill was 350rpm. It is found that from the diffraction patterns of the Fe-Si composite powders, the peaks of Si begin to disappear with the increasing of the milling time, which indicats the forming of supersaturatedα-Fe(Si) solid solution.
