Public building, offices, factories, bridges and power plants are subject to vibrations as a result from agents exterior to the building, such as earthquakes, traffic, wind, etc. or from agents interior to it, such as machinery, equipment, services, etc. In recent years, the vibration insulation of buildings, with special requirements has become more and more common practice. Modern man's awareness that vibrations influence his comfort considerably and his concern for the well - functioning of his assets, such as buildings and equipments, cause modern building vibration requirements to be severe. The principle to insulate buildings effectively from vibrations is to construct them on resilient pads and by ensuring the non-existence of flanking paths in construction detailing. The resilient mounting characteristics depends on the nature of the vibrations to be insulated, the static forces to which they are subject and the dynamic behaviour of the building structural system. Successful results can only be obtained by extensive environmental vibration survey, detailed structural static and dynamic calculations, justified use of resilient materials, thoroughly tested and manufactured under high quality control and special adaptions in the building structural system and lay-out. Detailed vibration analysis and correct choice of resilient mounting reveal to be of the utmost importance.
