This paper is concerned with the development of CFD as an industrial tool for product design and development. It traces the history of the methodology from its early beginnings to the present day, covering all aspects, including the core numerical methodology, physics modelling, pre and postprocessing and integration with other CAE tools. Examples are shown of recent applications in the automobile industry to external aerodynamics, engine cooling and combustion and other areas. Likely directions for future development are also identified.
