This paper studies impact energy absorption characteristics using FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastics) structures, especially P-u curves. Bamboo, jute and glass fibers are used as reinforcements. Three fundamental shapes, i.e. hemi-sphere, truncated-cone and cylinder, are chosen as the unit structures, which are fabricated by the deep drawning process to conduct impact compression tests with an impact velocity of up to 15m/s. The three structures are shown to yield distinct impact energy absorption characteristics corresponding to their buckling and fracture modes for every reinforcement. Deformation and fracture modes under impact compression are compared in terms of the load-displacement curve, total absorbed energy and its efficiency, and their interrelationships are extensively discussed.
