Geotechnical correlations in Madrid soil from SPT and Pressuremeter tests

Plenty of new infrastructures are going to be built in Madrid and the Geotechnical works to study them are being done nowadays. Among them, outstands a new Atocha-Chamartin underground railway line, between the two main railway stations in Madrid, because it crosses under Madrid from North to South. It is being constructed with TBMs. In order to predict the behaviour of the soil, 25 boreholes have been drilled along the 10 km length of this line with final depths between 30 m and 60 m. Among the different kind of tests carried out, the most usual "in situ" geotechnical tests carried out were Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and Pressuremeter tests. Both kind of tests fits quite well with the characteristic soil of Madrid, compound of sands and clays in different percentages. The number of tests carried out were about 200 tests for each one, SPT and Pressuremeter; and the number of tests employed in the correlations of this Paper are 182.
