Continuing Concerns:a report card assessment of progress in addressing community,regulatory,and industry issues in Calcasieu Parish,Louisiana

Calcasieu Parish,Louisiana is home to approximately 25 industrial facilities,producing a broad range of chemicals and refined products.Recent events have highlighted what is a common emerging problem in many industrialized communities:the effects of years of industrial operation on the evolution of the communities that surround them.Among the positive effects of industrialization are the creation of jobs and economic success throughout the area.Among the negative effects are environmental impacts from years of operation without fully understanding and regulating the risks to people and resources.Thus a difficult dichotomy is created-and for some the question is"success,but at what price?"Newly defined manifestations of this dichotomy include the concerns expressed in the environmental justice movement,which is receiving increased attention in all parts of the country.
