In August of 2002,Environment Canada conducted a two-day study of the evolution of the urban plume downwind of Edmonton,Alberta.Edmonton,with a regional population close to one million,is located in Parkland eco-region and about 65 km east of several coal-fired power plants.Large petrochemical refineries and a variety of medium industry are located on the eastern edge and to the northeast of the city.During a period of predominantly light,westerly winds,atmospheric chemistry sampling was completed using airborne instrumentation and a mobile air-monitoring laboratory,as well as existing meteorology and air quality surface stations.Results of this monitoring are presented and summarized.The data are also considered in the context of preceding and anticipated routine and intensive monitoring programs in Central Alberta.Preliminary atmospheric chemistry modelling results are presented and compared with the observed values.
