The need for progressive environmental engineering education in developing countries may be greater than that for industrialized countries since these areas of the world must deal with rapidly increasing industrialization and severe land development impacts with fewer resources and expanding populations. The objective of this paper is to compare the scope of educational needs of environmental engineers past, present, and for the visionary future.Training for engineering/environmental professionals in developing countries will require transfer of information and skills common to those in industrialized countries. However, these professionals will be required to do more with less and face greater constraints.Strategies employed must in many cases be simple using locally available resources and culturally acceptable methods.Even small advances however may result in significant positive impacts on human health and the environment. The need for prioritization of needs using riskbased, holistic, multimedia approaches with focus on a regional/global perspective stressing resource management will be of utmost importance to successful accomplishment of their objectives. In these ways the goal of sustainable development will become a reality and mankind will be capable of attaining a higher level of co-existence with his environment for this and future generations.
