A novel method for adding natural gas to the inlet of a rotary valve Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) was developed and has been in service for over 3 years at several sites. The method of gas injection has reduced operating cost for RTO's up to 25% and subsequently reduced stack emissions of CO, NOx, and VOC. The resulting process is Factory Mutual approved and patent pending. This paper will provide details from two sites where the technology has been incorporated into rotary valve RTO installation. One of the test sites was a new installation. As a result no substantial system changes were required add this method of gas injection to the system. In the second case, an existing unit was retrofitted in the field and subsequent lessons learned. In both cases, some operating data and emissions results before and after use of the gas injection will be provided.
