In recent years, epidemiological studies have shown associations between ambient particulate matter (PM) concentration and health effects. Exposure to elevated levels of PM concentrations is related to increased mortality and a number of pulmonary effects. Ambient PM consists of a variety of toxic species (e.g., heavy metals and carcinogenic organic compounds) and may have detrimental effects on human health.
