Global warming, increasingly thought to be associated with the atmospheric emission of greenhouse gases (principally CO2), is emerging as the key environmental issue of the early 21st century. The average atmospheric concentration of CO2 has increased from 336 ppm to 378 ppm during the last 27 years. Fossil fuels used for power generation, transportation, and by non-utility sectors are the primary sources of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. While there are many potential approaches to limiting greenhouse gas emissions, including increased energy efficiency and use of carbon-free fuels, it is becoming increasingly clear that CO2 capture and sequestration will play an important role in mitigating the progress of global warming. In the near future CO2 capture efforts will likely focus on large stationary sources, such as fossil fueled power plants, since they will offer the benefits of economy of scale and the greatest benefits of carbon dioxide reduction from any one industry.
