FELINE LOWER URINARY TRACT DISEASE: WHAT DO WE REALLY KNOW?

The term feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) has been used to describe and encompass all causes of lower urinary tract signs in cats (i.e., hematuria, stranguria, pollakiuria, inappropriate urination, urethral obstruction). These causes includebacterial, mycoplasma, or viral infections; urolithiasis; and idiopathic disease. While it is appropriate to try to establish the cause of lower urinary tract signs in cats, it is important to note that approximately 65% of these cats will be found to have idiopathic disease (idiopathic FLUTD). This percentage has not changed in the last 30 years despite changes in feline diets, treatment protocols, and prophylactic measures.
