Feline cystine urolithiasis:another cause of feline lower urinary tract disease

Review of feline uroliths submitted to the Minnesota Urolith Center from 17 cats revealed that all were composed of 100% cystine. All uroliths submitted to our Center were obtained from the lower urinary tract (samples from 10 cats came from the bladder, while samples from one cat came from the bladder and urethra, samples from one cat came from the urethra, and 5 samples were voided). Large radiodense bilateral renoliths subsequently developed in a cat that initially had only urocystoliths. The initial clinical signs of affected cats were characteristic of feline lower tract disease (hematuria, dysuria, pollakiuria, and/of urethral obstruction).
