Monitoring the critically ill patient begins with the physical assessment. The technician should become skilled at performing physical assessment or examination; it defines the patient’s responses to the disease process. The physical examination helps to determine what monitoring techniques will be employed. The physical exam also helps to establish a baseline for comparison in evaluating ongoing nursing or medical interventions. The physical exam does not require any special equipment; we can makeuse of our senses. Looking, listening, feeling, and smelling can yield a variety of information. A complete physical examination is performed; it will be necessary to develop some system of examining a patient so as not to miss potential problems.
