A practical approach to vomiting in the dog cat

The chronic vomiting patient is one of the most common diagnostic and therapeutic challenges facing the veterinary clinician. It is often difficult to determine from the medical history and physical examination to differentiate between etiologies ofvomiting in the dog and cat. Chronic vomiting is a particularly frustrating problem for both pet owners and clinicians. It must be remembered that vomiting may be a clinical sign associated with primary gastrointestinal disease or extra-gastrointestinaldisease. Increased availability of advanced diagnostics such as flexible endoscopy and ultrasound have allowed the veterinary clinician to more readily diagnose and manage underlying diseases leading to vomiting without the need for invasive procedures such exploratory laparotomy.
