Feral cats are the offspring of domestic house pets that revert to a wild state when raised without human contact. Although feral kittens can be tamed into acceptable pets if captured at a very young age (generally less than 8 weeks), enormous effortis often required to tame older feral cats. Feral cats typically exist in small colonies associated with human civilization, and are frequently found at farms, restaurants, mobile home parks, apartment complexes, school properties, vacant lots, militarybases, and near private residences. They are efficient scavengers and may subsist entirely on refuse. Prey makes up less than 20 percent of the diets of feral cats living in association with humans. Well-meaning "caretakers" who feel sympathy for the cats, but do not claim ownership of them, feed many feral cats.
