^7fNew polyolefin compounds have been developed for fabrication of optic cable loose buffer tubes. These novel compounds feature a unique cost/performance balance versus the impact modified polypropylene and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) materials currently in commercial use. Commercial scale extrusion trials have demonstrated good processing capabilities, with good quality tubes produced at high production speeds. The buffer tubes from these trials show substantially advantaged Excess Fiber Length (EFL) performance when compared to conventional impact modified polypropylene materials commercially used in the application. In addition, the new compounds provide very competitive balance of high stiffness and good toughness, especially following exposure to hydrocarbon oil based buffer tube gel. Material optimization studies to further improve the performance balance after gel exposure are highlighted.
