Diabetic macular edema is traditionally evaluated by clinical biomicroscopic examination, and fluorescein angiography.1 Fluorescein angiography provides a qualitative assessment of vascular leakage; however, it cannot accurately measure retinal thickness which is better correlated with visual loss. Newer imaging modalities including optical coherence tomography (OCT) offer a unique approach to diabetic macular edema and allow quantification of retinal thickness as well as structural architecture. In the absence of macular ischemia, OCT is a useful adjunct for the diagnosis and management of diabetic macular edema.
