A triruthenium cluster,(mu_3,eta~2,eta~3,eta~5-acenaphthylene)Ru_3(CO)_7 (1),catalyzed the silane-induced polymerization of vinyl ethers efficiently to form the corresponding polyvinyl ethers with an organosilyl group at the polymer end.Production of poly(t-butyl vinyl ether) with narrow molecular weight distribution (M_w.M_n < 1.4) was accomplished by appropriate selection of reaction conditions.Mechanistic aspects are discussed from the reaction profiles and end group and stereoregularity analyses of the product.Application of this polymerization to synthesis of polyvinyl ethers bearing alkoxysilyl end groups or siloxane units is also presented.
