Recent advances in digital control of multi-shaker and multi-axis systems have made Rectangular Control an achievable, if not a simple, reality. Most current multishaker, MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output), tests are performed on the basis of a "square" arrangement, in which the number of control transducers equals the number of controlled exciters. However, cases exist in which it is desirable to have more control transducers than exciters. This has been termed "Rectangular" control. This paper examines the theory behind this approach and also gives some practical results. Also included are some unexpected benefits which may result from this new control approach.
