The response of wood-frame roofs strengthened with FRP sheathing panels is discussed in this paper. First, a finite element model is developed using commercial software. The model uses standard elements to represent sheathing and framing and a "user" element to represent nailed connections between sheathing and framing. Comparison of the finite element response with measured data from testing of a 3.66 by 7.32 m wood-frame roof, before and after strengthening, shows that the finite element model is fairly accurate. Second, the effects of different sheathing panel arrangements and different nail types on the overall roof strength is predicted via a parametric study using the finite element model. Results indicate that wood-frame roofs using FRP sheathing panels are 37 percent to 144 percent stronger and nearly twice as stiff compared to unstrengthened roofs.
