CEFTIOFUR RESIDUES IN MILK AND TISSUES OF LACTATING DAIRY Cows FOLLOWING THE INTRAMAMMARY INFUSION OF SPECTRAMAST LC INTO ALL FOUR QUARTERS

Ceftiofur is a broad-spectrum, third generation cephalosporin antibiotic that is bacteriocidal in nature. Ceftiofur inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by interfering with enzymes essential for peptidoglycan synthesis which results in lysis of thebacterial cell. Consequently, ceftiofur should be effective against a wide range of contagious and environmental mastitis pathogens. Spectramast LC is a new intramammary (IMM) infusion product that contains a sterile suspension of ceftiofur hydrochloride. The objectives of the three studies summarized here were to determine the concentration of ceftiofur-related residues in milk and tissues after the IMM administration of 125 mg of ceftiofur hydrochloride into all four quarters at a 24-hour interval following either a 2-dose (normal therapy) or 8-dose (extended therapy) regimen.
