Modern Dairy Production Systems Integrating Biologic, Economic, Environmental, and Social Issuesto Address Consumer Concerns

In a post-modern world the authority of science, government, religion, news outlets and even reason is constantly called into question. The world is not black and white but instead there are multiple versions of the truth. One person or group's version of the truth is not necessarily truer than another's. This presents vulnerabilities and challenges for debates regarding many topics, perhaps especially those related to the natural world and science where the current state of the educational system may create particular vulnerabilities. It is certainly the nature of capitalism to disperse information that contains bias by design. Lack of facts makes debate less useful. This paper does not propose to establish facts but to suggest some frameworks forthe discussion, point to some obvious achievements and failures of industrial dairy production and highlight some structural impediments to reducing the angst that currently exists among both producers and consumers of dairy foods.
