One Step Acid Cleaner For Efficient CIP Cleaning Applications

Cleaning and sanitizing of milking equipment is required to insure and maintain the bacterial quality of milk. In heavy duty, 24 hour milking installation cleaning is required every 8 hours to prevent the build-up of milk soils, bacterial and bio-film. The typical cleaning procedure includes pre-rinse, alkaline cleaning, acid rinse and sanitizing. Every minute used for cleaning represents a lost opportunity for milk production. The conventional CIP cleaners are generally formulated with highly alkaline materials such as caustic soda and hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) in high concentrations for the removal of protein and fatty soils. The alkaline cleaning process reduces solubility of hardness minerals, requiring an additional acid wash afterwards toremove soiled scale build-up from the hard surface. Typically, acid detergents themselves are poor at cleaning milk soils. A chlorine-free liquid acid detergent (DeLaval Zone~R) based on patented1"2 technology was developed to clean and de-scale dairy pipelines in a single wash cycle. Milk soil removal from stainless steel surfaces under a range of temperature and hardness conditions was demonstrated using laboratory cleaning tests. We report here the results of cleaning trials in commercial dairy installations.
