Microbiological culture of milk samples is the gold standard for determining intrarnammary infection. Results can be used to distinguish pathogens with different patterns of infection and require different treatments. However, milk culturing is usually performed in laboratories and results are not often available when treatment decisions are made for clinical mastitis cases. Several researchers have evaluated on-farm culture systems used to guide treatment decisions for clinical mastitis (Godden et al., 2007). According to Neeser et al. (2006), farms that implemented on-farm culture systems reduced antibiotic use. This study tested one set of media for on-farm culture and evaluated treatment outcomes when protocols were based on culture results.
