Staphylococci are the bacteria most frequently isolated from intramammary infections on Italian dairy goat farms (Moroni et al., 2005) and considered the most important etiological agents for mastitis in goats (Bergonier, et al., 2003). Among this group, Staphylococcus aureus is considered a major contagious pathogen. The immunity system is the main barrier of the caprine mammary gland against bacterial infection and functions through complex actions and interactions of hundreds of genes. Microarrayanalysis is a method developed to simultaneously study expression of multiple genes in tissues as a response to a given treatment or physiological condition. The objective of this study was to use a microarray to study the transcriptional mRNA expressionof genes in milk somatic cells derived from goats with S. aureus mastitis.
