Towards the Identification of Optimal Solvents for Long Chain Alkanes with the SAFT Equation of State

An optimisation framework is presented to enable the identification of immiscibility in binary mixtures of short and long-chain n-alkanes, or polymers. Using the SAFT-HS equation of state and introducing a general thermodynamic criterion implying liquid-liquid immiscibility, the largest short-chain n-alkane, which is immiscible with a given long-chain n-alkane is identified. Possible applications of this study can be found in solvent and mixture design formulations in the oil and polymerisation industry, where short-chain alkanes are readily available on-site and can offer good performance.
