Acoustics echo cancellers (AEC) are necessary for voice communication systems such as teleconferencing and hands free system to reduce undesired echoes that result from coupling between the loudspeaker and microphone. A stereo voice communication system provides a more realistic presence than a monophonic system, because listeners can use spatial information such as intensity difference and time delay between two channels to place the speaker between left and right loudspeakers. Especially when many different speakers are involved in a voice communication, this separation between two loudspeakers is very important. But the problem such as "nonuniqueness" presents a fundamental limitation to the performance of stereo AEC system. In the following, we explain the main problems encountered in a stereo AEC system due to the strong cross-correlation between the two input signals and we analyze the effect of speaker position and microphone arrangement on the robustness of stereophonic acoustic echo cancellation through computer simulation. Finally, we propose the optimal position of speaker and microphone arrangement based on the simulation results.
