GMES core services - land monitoring

The objective of GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) is "to monitor the state of the environment on land, at sea and in the atmosphere". To accomplish this objective, GMES is developing a group of core services. The European Environment Agency (EEA) is the organization responsible for the implementation of the precursor service on land monitoring. This service delivered, for the reference year 2006, ortho-rectified multispectral satellite imagery (IMAGE2006), Corine land cover changes 2000-2006; Corine land cover 2006 and high resolution land cover data for built-up and forest areas. This initiative is one of the European contributions to GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems). In the frame of land monitoring, EEA is also collaborating with the European Space Agency in the GlobCorine project. The current paper gives insight into the current efforts concerning database development and the demonstration of a use case based on the LEAC methodology.
