Pain can be defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage. There are indications that pain is frequently under-diagnosed and inadequately managed in dogs and cats (Hansen and Hardie, 1993). It is possible that the situation is similar in other species of domestic animals. Pain is a subjective sensation non-communicable from animals to man. Consequently it is relatively difficult to recognise the degreeof pain and suffering requiring medical management.
