Vacuum Brazing of An S-Band Electron Linac Photo Cathode Gun

We have built and cold-tested a prototype Plane Wave Transformer (PWT) linac structure, resonating at the designed frequency of 2856 MHz. The third prototype PWT linac, has been successfully brazed and leak-tested to a leak-rate of better than 1x10~(-9) Torr l/s, and is currently being used for acceleration trials. We have also successfully built two brazing prototypes of the Laser photo cathode gun out of Electrolytic Tough Pitch (ETP) copper to determine the optimum number of brazing cycles required for the final brazing, before going on to build the final gun prototype of Oxygen free electronic grade (OPE) copper. In this paper we report the results of our initial brazing trials and the final brazing sequence followed in the successful brazing of both these structures.
