Vacuum System for 10 MeV, 10 kW Industrial RF Electron Linac

A prototype RF electron linear accelerator (LINAC) capable of delivering beam of energy 10 MeV with an average power of 10 kW has been designed and is being developed at BARC. The linac will be housed at Electron Beam Centre (EBC), Kharghar, Navi Mumbai and exclusively used for industrial applications. The entire RF accelerator Assembly consisting of Electron Gun, RF Linac Structure, RF Power feed section, Beam diagnostic chambers, Scan Horn, Vacuum plumbing lines etc. have been fabricated and individually vacuum leak tested for a ~ 10~(-10) mbar-lit/ sec. The total mock up assembly consisting of above sub-assemblies at CDM, BARC was installed and evacuated. A vacuum of the order of ~ 3 x 10~(-5) mbar was achieved with the help of 400 lit/sec Turbo molecular Pumping unit. The vacuum level requirement of about ~ 10~(-8) ton is evaluated by taking into considerations the voltage breakdown problem inside the cavity. This paper describes the salient features of the 10 MeV, 10 kW RF Linac vacuum system alongwith the results, also the brief details of the major sub-systems of the linac.
