Welding of dissimilar metals like Al to Steel, Al to SS and Cu to SS is difficult. Dissimilar metals produce a brittle inter-metallic compound at weld temperature. This causes weld joint failure. Process has been evolved to provide a third intermediate metal film, which is mutually soluble in both the metals and good adherence at the grain boundary at molten state. This third metal has to be applied by electro-deposition processes and then be welded by different welding process. This process has helped to encounter the difficulty of welding of SS conflate flanges of UHV chamber made of Al or Cu alloys.
