We have developed a new adhesion test that is useful for measuring the adhesion of paints and lacquers to thin metallic substrate such as steel, tinplate or aluminum. The test, which is based on crack propagation, tends to drive the crack towards the metallic substrate and encourage interfacial failure. Mechanical analysis of the test has made it possible to obtain approximate fracture toughness values from the test results.
