Nymphonella tapetis (sea spiders) are bivalve-infesting Pycnogonida which seriously damage bivalves in their massive proliferation time. An effective killing method hitherto not established. In this study, experiments were performed to kill the N. tapetis using electrical stresses by applying pulsed power technology. The results show that shockwaves generated by pulsed discharges or wire explosion can break and kill N. tapetis. Pulsed current is also able to kill N. Tapetis without injured. In most living conditions of the N. Tapetis: seawater or sands or bivalves, 100% of death ratio is obtained depending on the applied parameters. This study demonstrates that pulsed power technology can be a useful tool to kill N. Tapetis.
