Hypothyroidism in a Red-Iored Amazon (Amazona autumnalis)

Hypothyroidism may be one of the more over-diagnosed diseases in pet bird medicine. This case report describes a pet bird with signs of hypothyroidism, subsequent diagnostics including skin biopsies and provocative thyroid gland assays, and response to treatment. ITie thyroid gland assays will be discussed in detail to give practitioners information on a relatively inexpensive method to diagnose this disease.
