As avionics display formats progress to perspective and 3-dimensional (3D) viewing modes, a problem arises that the conventional 2-dimensional (2D) instrument formats (e.g., altimeter, ADI, and compass) cannot be easily integrated into the 3-dimensional display space. Thus avionics designers are faced with the choice of 1) overlaying conventional 2D symbology on a 3D scene, which can cause distortion and misregistration, or 2) displaying the 2D and 3D symbology on separate display panels. Both of these design alternatives tend to increase pilot visual scanning time and therefore mental workload. The problem is particularly pronounced with regard to the conventional 2D compass rose symbology. Rotation of a conventional compass rose on a 2D plane overlaid on a 3D scene does not register well with rotation of the scene in 3D display space, because the rotation relationship is not linear.
